Our binocular vision allows us to enjoy a 3D world full of detail and depth. However, conditions like strabismus, where the eyes are misaligned and look in different directions, can affect our ability to see clearly and stereoscopically. Fortunately, this surgery offers an effective solution to correct this misalignment and restore binocular vision.

What is Strabismus Surgery?

Strabismus surgery is a procedure aimed at aligning the eyes so they can focus together and send a single image to the brain.

During the surgery, the ophthalmologist makes a small incision in the conjunctiva, the white membrane that covers the front of the eye. Next, they locate the extraocular muscles, which control eye movements. Once located, these muscles can be adjusted to achieve optimal alignment. This can be done in two ways:

  • Muscle recessions: One or more muscles are weakened to allow the eye to move in the correct direction.
  • Muscle resections: One or more muscles are strengthened to correct the misalignment.

In some cases, the length of the muscles may also be adjusted to achieve proper alignment. The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia and can be done on one or both eyes.

What are the benefits of Strabismus Surgery?

This surgery offers several benefits, including:

  • Improved binocular vision: It can help restore binocular vision, allowing the patient to see in 3D with greater clarity and depth.
  • Reduction of double vision: Eye misalignment can cause double vision, which can be bothersome and affect quality of life. Surgery can help eliminate or reduce double vision.
  • Improved spatial perception: It can enhance the patient’s spatial perception, allowing for more accurate distance and movement calculations.
  • Enhanced facial aesthetics: Eye misalignment can affect facial aesthetics. Surgery can help correct this issue and achieve a more symmetrical appearance.
